Photoshop is used for a huge range of creative image and production tasks like print production, product visualisations, film matte backgrounds...the list goes on. Pretty much every commercial printed image you look at will have gone through Photoshop at some stage of the production cycle. It is the industry standard tool for image editing, and experts in their fields will agree - there is often more than one way to edit and manipluate images in Photoshop. I have read a-lot about this around the Internet, and there is a-lot of debate about how to stop this shift in colours when you use the ’save for web’ function. I will explain what I do in as easy to understand manner as possible! This is something that is really annoying for Photoshop users, especially those that have little or no understanding of colour profiles and ’soft proofing’.

Here is the scenario - you have an image that you have colour corrected to your hearts content. You the go to ’save for web’ and disaster strikes - the contrast can go a bit wishywashy, saturation is lost and all-in-all your perfect image doesn’t look so perfect anymore! Don’t panic, just follow my simple step to perfect web colour!

Yes, a shameless plug for Photoshop Ninja (come on guys - it doesn’t happen very often!!) As part for WordCamp UK 2008 - the conference for UK WordPress blogers and developers, there is an awards ceremony to be held at the event (which I’ll be attending, so see you there!!). The Humphries are designed to recongnise UK WordPress bloggers and Photoshop Ninja is in the ‘content’ category.

This is something that catches a-lot of Photoshop users out. You are getting used to using layers and think they are wonderful. Moving them around - re-ordering them to your hearts content! Then you do something on the ‘background’ layer and suddenly realise that you can’t move it… it won’t budge even in the layers palette, let alone moving it around you actual image canvas!!

Creating a solid background - the sensible way!

I often see Photoshop files where the background is filled with a flat colour. The simple way to do this is to simply select all and fill with the desired colour - but what if you change your canvas size… back to step one because your left with a rectangle filled with one colour surrounded by your background colour! There is a simpler, more flexible way of-course!

Moving selections whilst drawing them

Sometimes you will want to make a marquee selection, and move it whilst still drawing it (you still with me!). So rather than draw it and then move it, this technique allows you to draw it AND move it AND THEN still keep resizing your selection.
